My decision to pursue a career as a healthcare professional is based on the inspiration I got from other healthcare professionals as well as my own source of inspiration that lies within me. Growing up I did not have a set career passion. However, I knew from at an early age - I wanted a career that was professional, and one that would allow me to make a difference in the lives of others. A career that would offer me room for growth, change my status in life, and allow me to create a better foundation for my children. It was not until I came to the United States of America and got my first job in the hospital as a Unit Clerk that I decided on what career path to choose. Each day as I observed and worked side by side with these healthcare professionals I saw the difference they were making in the lives of others. That was when I knew this was the career path for me. I realized that a career as a healthcare professional would fulfill my childhood dreams, as it offers all the things I aspire to achieve. I had wanted this for a long time, so I jump at the opportunity and started taking classes to fulfill my dreams; but life’s circumstances took me off course and I was unable to continue. Years passed, but I never gave up on my dream of achieving a career in the health care field. I continued to think about the number of careers and also thought about which one of the many health care professions would best fit my life. That was when I decided that becoming a Registered Nurse by profession would be an excellent career choice. I see nursing as a long-term rewarding career. It offers me the flexibility to work fulltime and still have plenty of time to care for and bond with my family. Being a Registered Nurse would also allow me to make a difference in the lives of others. Also, as a Registered Nurse there are many different options to choose from, and it is a profession that allows for growth.
Growing up I always saw myself as a leader. My leadership qualities come from difference sources. My first leadership role began in Jamaica at the age of nineteen (19). I saw a young girl about age ten (10) in my community who had educational and personal care needs, and decided to become her mentor and tutor. After speaking with her mother, I took an active role in her life, making sure that she was learning to read and to care for herself as a female. This young girl went on to being an avid reader, despite being behind for many years. This experience was the driving force behind the conceptualization and ultimate commencement of my own foundation; Love Of Hearts Foundation Incorporated. To date, the foundation has assisted many young girls in Jamaica. Another source of my leadership experience resulted from my being a Teacher’s Assistant. After the unplanned and immediate resignation of the class teacher, I was assigned as the main teacher for the class, which had over thirty (30) students. Here, I had to implement new lessons daily and new strategies to effectively manage and lead the children. I am also an avid volunteer at my church and within my community. Volunteering and providing services to those in need, has helped in preparing me with the experience required for the direction I want to go with my life, as well as helped to form and groom me spiritually. As a Registered Nurse I will be able to continue to impact the lives of others with my newly gained knowledge and skills. My desire to make a difference in the lives of others will ultimately continue, as I grow in my career in the healthcare field.
